Choosing a Monologue

We catch up again with a National Youth Theatre hopeful, with two days to go before she performs to NYT representatives.

So this post is about the build up to the audition. Obviously there is quite a lot of preparation to do before the day itself. However, this doesn't mean you're not going to get in. I don't even know the outcome yet! Hopefully that is what is going to be helpful during this post for you!

For the NYT I have been asked to choose a monologue from a play, learn it and have it ready to perform during your audition slot! I have chosen a piece from an adaptation of the book into script form- Across the Barricades. Thankfully I have a drama teacher to help me choose my piece but if you don't- never worry!

There are many books full of speeches to use. I recommend learning a piece which suits you. If you're a girl- choose a piece for a female of your age. If you are 15 don't play a character who is 43. You need to be able to relate with your character- it's vital as it allows ou to perform your piece truly!

Everything else from then on has been plain sailing (fingers crossed). You have to learn the piece, practice and keep calm. You are sent the details of when to arrive so don't be late! At NYT there is a workshop before the singular audition. You get to meet people around your age who share a passion with you!

So now I just have to keep calm and carry on until Saturday. I'll keep you updated!

Barbican- Why to Take a Visit!

As soon as I stepped into the building I felt the typical pre-performance buzz everywhere. Children, teens and adults alike moved from one place to another helped by brilliant and enthusiastic staff!

Performances range from plays for a young audience to Shakespeare- even with David Tennant as Richard II. Workshops and concerts are also included. The building, both modern and striking holds not only theatres but a fantastic library which I treated myself to a free membership!

The library holds classics, plays, horror, fiction, non-fiction and many more! Audios, CDs and even pianos for you to silently practice on! It truly is a treat for any literature lover.

The barbican is also a great walking distance from the Moorgate station, the Guildhall's new centre and the magnificent river side which is even more stunning in the summer!

You must, whether you have five minutes or five hours, make a trip to the Barbican.    I wouldn't say it's a once in a lifetime opportunity because I wish you the good fortune of seeing this marvellous place over and over again!

The Guildhall School of Music and Drama's Hamlet

Once again another triumph can be added to The Guildhall's shelf of accomplishments. Their new, beautiful and chilling performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet was no disappointment!

The country sound of the guitar rang through the spectral mist on stage. The simplistic set was arranged wonderfully as actors moved swiftly from one side to another. The haunting song which featured throughout the performance was buzzing in my head as I left the theatre- fully satisfied and amazed at the quality and talent of the acting, direction and lighting.

For any Shakespeare fan this is a must see. Even if you have never seen a Shakespeare in your life you must visit this play. The way in which the actors expressed their lines made the content and story easy to understand and enjoy.

A stellar performance from the cast was maintained throughout the performance. I found myself touched by Queen Gertrude- played by Faith Alabi- and constantly laughing at Polonius's awful yet pleasing jokes portrayed by Jacob Fortune-Lloyd.

The unique yet interesting use of four different Hamlets was well directed by Jo McInnes who not only added an edgy feel to the play but a fresh outlook into one of Shakespeare's most complex scripts.

Make a journey to Milton Court Studio and relax whilst watching the powerful portrayal of William Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Upcoming Excitement

Divergent

The first film that I am highly anticipating is called Divergent. Based on the brilliant trilogy by Veronica Roth, this is a must see spectacular out just this year! The trailers are available to watch now. Divergent follows the adventures of Tris- a 16 year old who must delve into the world of political injustice. She must choose a faction. This means she has to choose a way of life which she cannot change/ the task is simple but not for Tris; she is divergent. And in the times ahead- unsteady and unknown- she finds comfort in a friend; but is he trustworthy or too mystifying for anyone- even a divergent?

The Fault in our Stars

Inspired by John Greens beautiful novel- 2014 brings new surprises, this release being just one of many few. If you are able to cry easily- especially in the cinema, bring a box of tissues- this film will not leave a dry eye in the house. Hazel and Gus are two teenagers destined to meet eachother when they both attend a cancer support group. Both share the same dark humour, wit and love of life- not to mention books. One wish, one life, one love. The trip of a lifetime leads to more than anyone could have expected.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

So the last two have been quite romantic in some parts but this film is full to the brim with drama and sci-fi. For anyone that enjoyed the two previous films this is a definite film to add to your wish list. This time the survivors of the simian plague commence a war between humanity and Caesar's apes. The rebellion of the caged mammals has begun!

Earth to Echo

The director of this upcoming film, Dave Green, has not only been nominated for an award but won one as well! Exciting adventures are instore when a group of friends start to recieve strange encrypted text messages. Soon the inner detective takes over and the children uncover more than they can handle. A unique idea with talented actors is sure to be a hit.

Of course there are many other amazing films coming up but from 2015 onwards it is quite difficult to find out more information! The list below is just a quick reminder to look out for the treats ahead!

Pitch Perfect
The Boy Next Door
Lazarus
Insurgent

Fast and the Furious 7
The Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ted 2
The Bourne Identity 5

Please remember the 2015 schedule may be changed.

Hurry before it's too late! One man, two guvnors closes soon and the reviews are phenomenal. This classic comedy has become not only a hit but it has made it's way to my must-see list! I really want to go but I have a feeling I won't make it to the Haymarket Theatre Royal any time soon.
